New research conducted by British psychologists shows that an average person spends about five hours a day – roughly one-third of their waking hours in front of their phone. What is “Bad Blue Light”?

Light is composed of electromagnetic particles that travel in waves.  These waves emit energy, and vary in length and strength. Wavelengths are measured in nanometers (nm).  Every wavelength is represented by a different color and categorized into x-rays, ultraviolet (UV) rays, visible light, etc.  Together these wavelengths make up the electromagnetic spectrum. The human eye is sensitive to only one part of this spectrum: visible light. Visible light is seen as colors: blue, green, yellow, orange, violet, indigo and red.

According to the Health Publishing Department of Harvard Medical School, the bad blue light emission ranged from 370-480nm is harmful to our health. Eyes exposed to blue light on a daily basis may cause visual fatigue and contributes to myopia and other eyes damages. Blue light can also interrupt normal sleep patterns. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to bad blue light may cause retinal damage and add to age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to loss of vision.

According to Taiwan Health Foundation, blue light is more likely to produce “free radicals” in the retina, accelerating apoptosis. The latest animal experiments also show that excessive blue light may lead to retinal macular disease. Although it is not yet confirmed in the human body, it is better to take precaution.
