Jazwalke: Shaping our youth’s mind, body, & soul through dance, structure and mentorship
JazWalke Inspired by Dance Program provides dance lessons to various organizations focused on youth in high-risk communities to allow the students to thrive with dance as a creative outlet. They are passionate about uplifting youth that are victims of environments stricken by substance abuse, parental neglect and violence.
JazWalke’s desire is to advocate for children and teens who have been neglected and/or are victims of substance-abuse families. Each year JazWalke will hold a Benefits Concert and all of the proceeds will go towards the children being sponsored for their tuition, performance costumes and dance competition travel expenses.
Keana Jacobs (JazWalke founder), has over 20 years of experience as a professional dance instructor. A dancer since the age of nine, Ms. Jacobs got her start performing in LA area talent shows, showcasing her passion for dance and choreography at an early age. By age 12, Keana began formal dance training at Hawthorne Dance Academy. During her first year with the program, she received the coveted “dancer of the year” award. The passion that led her to participate in shows at 9, grew into a desire to share her gift with others. As a result, she began serving as an instructor at the age of 15. Her warm disposition and high level of energy benefited her in this role, translating as attributes that served her well when teaching others.
As a young child, Ms. Jacobs lost both of her parents tragically as a result of substance-abuse lifestyles. While she was fortunate to have love and support, Ms. Jacobs understands the negative impacts that substance abuse and parental negligence can have on a child. Because of everything she has been through, Keana is no stranger to pain and loss. Even though she received counseling, dance was the most effective therapy for her. Dance classes allowed her to be free and release her pain.
Once she realized how much dance helped her, she knew it could help others. She looks forward to extending the same love that dance offered to her to help others The overarching purpose of JazWalke is to instill positive self-image, give the students the tools to become team players, build self-confidence, impact the lives of others, and develop social skills.
Keana has started a crowdfunding campaign with a goal of raising $1,500 in order to produce JazWalke’s first out of 3 dance concept videos, bringing awareness to our Community Sponsorship Program. This program will sponsor 30 youth every year.
Her goal is to raise $1,500 by December 1st. The original JazWalke video was about the inspiration behind the project, and the next concept video will showcase their passion and creative work. This program will benefit children from various organizations including foster care, group homes & mentorship programs. It will also expose youth to an array of opportunities, while teaching them the importance of giving back to your own community and getting involved to make a difference.
